Ruthann P. Lacey is Of Counsel at Trace Brooks Law LLC. A nationally recognized expert in elder law and special needs planning, Ruthann brings to the firm over thirty years of experience in matters involving estate planning, probate, elder law, and planning for disability. Ruthann is one of a handful of Certified Elder Law Attorneys in Georgia, a designation that underscores her expertise in elder law.
Education and Experience
Licensed to practice in Georgia and Washington, D.C., Ruthann earned her B.A. in Music from Trinity College in Deerfield, Illinois, and her J.D. from Emory University School of Law in Atlanta, Georgia. She is a charter member of the Council of Advanced Practitioners and has served as Secretary for the National Elder Law Foundation.
In 2006, Ruthann became the first Elder Law Attorney in Georgia to be designated a Super Lawyer, a prestigious status she has maintained every year since. She also holds an AV rating from Martindale-Hubbell, the authoritative resource on the legal profession.
Memberships
Ruthann is an active member of the Special Needs Alliance, the Elder Law Section of the Atlanta Bar Association, and a former chair of the Elder Law Section of the Georgia Bar Association. She has served on the Continuity of Law Practice Committee of the State Bar and is a member of the DeKalb Estate Planning Council and the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA). Additionally, Ruthann is affiliated with the Georgia Trial Lawyers Association and the Lawyers Club of Atlanta and has served as a Trustee on the board of The Georgia Community Trust.

A prolific contributor to elder law, Ruthann has drafted legislation for the Georgia General Assembly and is a published writer. Her work has appeared in the Family Law Quarterly, Georgia Bar Journal, Georgia Probate Notes, and Exceptional Parent. She has been quoted in The Wall Street Journal and the American Bar Association Journal. As a sought-after speaker, she presents to professional and public groups at the local, state, and national levels and conducts staff training programs for nursing homes and hospitals. Ruthann has also taught Legal Research and Estates, Trusts, and Wills at the National Center for Paralegal Training.
Personal Information
Ruthann’s commitment to her family and her practice is unwavering. She has served on a missions outreach team, teaching business classes to small business owners in Chernihiv, Ukraine, and served on the board of NETWorks Cooperative Ministry. Outside of her professional life, Ruthann is a classically trained pianist who enjoys music, tennis, reading, photography, and traveling, particularly to beach destinations with her family.
